“These are amazing, thank you so much!!! We love them.”
Abi & Jon - married Kinkell Byre May 2022
Olliver Photography Ltd loves a wedding day at Kinkell Byre because…
It is a little bit of faded elegance, untouched historical beauty and wildness overlooking the beautiful St Andrew’s
You get the place to yourselves for the whole day and can make as much noise as you want
The light at Kinkell Byre is sublime, especially in the evening as the sun is setting over the Firth of Forth, with the steeples of St Andrews on the horizon
Inside and out Kinkell Byre is stunning and very photogenic…which makes it a weatherproof wedding venue : )
Couple shots and group shots are a doddle in the beautiful kitchen garden or amongst the wild flower meadows with the panoramic sea views as a backdrop
I’ve been shooting weddings there for years and know all the best places - click here to see my Kinkell Byre mosaic of images
FAQ’s
Q. What is your shooting style?
I am a reportage wedding photographer. The fly on the wall enjoying the story of your big day as it unfolds in front of him!
Q. Any advice on getting the best wedding shots?
Yup! Enjoy yourselves and ignore me for most of the day. We’ll chat about everything a week or two before the wedding so anything I need to know / capture will already be in the bag : )
Q. What do we get? When can I see my images?
You will be bursting to see images so, you get the following: within 1st week of your big day - a sneak peek slideshow, also available as a reel for use on social media. Within 2 weeks - access to my thank you card service. Within 4 weeks - an online password protected gallery for friends and family to enjoy, a password protected portal allowing access to downloads, prints and albums etc, and send all the images posted to you on a USB (both high and low res copies) in a beautiful presentation box, along with a couple of prints of my favourite images.
Q. Can we get couple shots on the beach?
Absolutely! Let’s jump in the car and head down. Shots on the beach are amazing. We just need to decide which one. East Sands, West Sands, Kings Barns, The Rock & Spindle…I could go on : )
Q. When is the best time and where is best for couple shots?
If you fancy getting the couple shots done quick, let’s stay at the beautiful Kinkell Byre. Simple! During the day, out the front is stunning in amongst the wild flowers, with sunlight streaking through the trees. Out the back in the evenings’ golden hour, with the fabulous firth of Forth in the background. This is even more stunning. I tend to need just 10 - 15 minutes for each session.
Q. When do you arrive and when do you leave?
When ever you want. We have a chat to go over the timings of the day so we can decide on this together. Basically, I am not limited by a set number of hours. I want to capture the story of your day and the evening. The narrative is the most important thing for me
Q. How do guests get to see our images, get access to downloads or prints etc?
Within 4 weeks of your big day I’ll get you a link to an online password protected portal allowing access to downloads, prints, framed prints and albums etc.
Q. Can you help us with thank you cards?
Yes. Within 2 weeks of your wedding day you get access to my thank you card service. But I can’t write them for you, ha, ha!
Q. It’s raining?
Bring a brolly and some wellies then! Happy to grab shots outside in the rain. I’m game if you are : )
Q. How do you factor in Kinkell Byre’s beautiful scenery?
I don’t really know! The views take my breath away each time and each wedding is different. Getting couple shots and an everybody shot and bridal party shots in amongst it is always key. It’s a really fun venue to be from a photographers’ point of view.

Some useful information for weddings at Kinkell Byre
Getting there: Kinkell Byre is a few miles from the ancient university town of St Andrews and an hours drive from Edinburgh. The nearest train station is Leuchars, which has direct trains from Edinburgh, Glasgow and London and there is also on-site parking
Getting ready: there loads of stylish hotels nearby that have lovely (and photogenic) rooms for you to get dolled up in. My faves are: The Fairmount and Hotel Du Vin. However, Kinkell have recently developed some fab and very stylish cabins with stunning seas views that will mean you can get ready on site
Kinkell Byre grounds: The grounds are currently being ‘rewilded’ so are wild and stunning and very photogenic; also they are entirely hidden from public view giving you a little piece of stunning Scottish coastline all to yourselves.
Yours for the day: The Byre and grounds will be yours for the entire day all the way through until midnight
The Byre: built in the 1700’s, this converted barn was originally for the coos but now provides the beautifully rustic and very cosy setting for the ceremony, the wedding breakfast (seating up to 200 guests) and the party.
Party time: one amazing advantage for getting married in the (mahoosive, but still cosy) Kinkell Byre is that a band can set up whilst you are finishing your food with no delays for partying.
Couple Shots and Group Shots at Kinkell Byre….
Grabbing shots of you guys and your best buddies at Kinkell Byre is super easy and lots of fun. For stunning panoramic shots, the wild flower meadows are amazing. There is a rewilding project taking place in the grounds which makes for some very photogenic opportunities and, if you’re lucky with the weather, shots in the golden hour with the sea views behind just to top things off. If we catch the light right, Kinkell sunsets make for amazing couple shots and a nice chance for you to take a quick break together. Also, trouping out with the bridal party in tow means we get the chance to capture some informal formal group shots which are a bit more fun than just standing in a line. For more information on my approach to couple shots please follow the link…basically I like to be super relaxed, not too posey and not to take too long!
“Christian, I just love them all…I’ve looked through them so many times over the last week and it just brings back so many happy memories of the day. Honestly, it means so much to us to have so many gorgeous memories- I can’t thank you enough for capturing our special day!”
Ceilidh’s and party time in the Byre…
Kinkell Byre is perfect for party time too. As there is so much space there is no delay for band set up meaning you can throw your shapes on the dance floor whenever you want to. I like to take my life in my hands and get in amongst a ceilidh which, like the venue itself, can get pretty wild. But it makes for some amazing shots!
